Eskom Suspends Load Shedding Option in South Africa
South Africa’s state-owned utility, Eskom has suspended load shedding, following an improved generation system and low weekend demand. “While we are able to suspend the load shedding at this point, it is important to note that the generation system is still vulnerable to breakdowns and load shedding may be required,” Eskom said.
Eskom currently has 4,116MW on planned maintenance, while another 12,437MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. Eskom commended South Africans for their patience and understanding during the load shedding.
UNDP Launches Innovation Competition for Off-Grid Solar
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched an off-grid solar financing scheme through the Climate Aggregation Platform (CAP). The project is aimed at promote the creation of creative financial aggregation models and structures that can boost accessibility and lowering the price of clean energy financing in developing nations.
UNDP said CAP is accepting submissions for solutions involving financial aggregation at various levels, such as aggregation of individual assets, projects, or businesses, as well as other cutting-edge aggregation models, such as carbon credit solutions, renewable energy certificates, cutting-edge debt financing models, and digital aggregation platforms. However, the pilot stage is limited to East Africa.
The CAP Financial Innovation Challenge is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). A total of five projects will be selected, including at least two in Uganda and Rwanda. The winning companies or organisations will receive USD 40,000 to develop their innovations.
UAE Firm to Develop 2GW RE Projects in Tanzania
Masdar, a UAE based renewable energy firm, is constructing two renewable energy projects in Tanzania. The company recently signed a deal with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco).
The deal covered the generation of 2100mw capacity produced by the Julius Nyerere Hydro Power Project (JNHPP). In a statement issued by Masdar, the joint venture with Tanesco has an initial target to develop a capacity of about 600MW, beginning with solar photovoltaic (PV) and later onshore wind.
“The joint venture will work on two energy projects that will ultimately generate 2GW of solar and onshore wind power,” Masdar said.
