Nigeria electricity workers, under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), have accused the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) of favouritism in the appointment and inauguration of the board members.
The workers also accused the minister of power, Abubakar Aliyu, of not carrying them along, and making them understand the challenges facing the power sector.
The aggrieved workers made their grievances known in a statement captioned, “TCN Board; Dead on Arrival.”
According to the workers, the TCN board lacked the required composition to bring desired positive changes in the Nigerian power transmission sector.
“Our attention has been drawn to the recently inaugurated board of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The Board, as currently constituted, lacks representation from the workers and does not enjoy robust composition required to bring about desired positive changes in the transmission sector.
“The Honourable Minister of Power who is supposed to supervise the Board; since his appointment, has not had any interface with workers’ representatives with a view to appreciating the challenges facing the sector and proffering solution to these perennial crises,” the union stated.
Recall that a few days ago, the federal government inaugurated the TCN board members with the Yobe State House of Assembly member, Bukar Bulama Buni and 13 others as directors. This is coming after seven years when the board led by Ibrahim Dahiru Waziri was dissolved in July 2015.
Meanwhile, a new board which was supposed to be chaired by Muhammad Ahmad was named in January 2021 but was not inaugurated.
But speaking further on the recently inaugurated board, the workers pointed out that in inaugurating a board for TCN, it was important to enquire what the terms of reference issued to them were; stressing that several failed/uncompleted projects in the past, particularly the Siemens project, have not yielded a positive result till date despite the huge resources pooled into it.
“This brings to bare numerous questions begging for answers concerning the composition of the TCN Board. Is this a professional service board or political reward? Can they deliver in terms of investment attractiveness, economy of scale, and effectiveness? Is there any academia with specialisation in electronic movement design on this Board?” the workers asked.
