As part of efforts to curb the rising cases of crude oil theft in Nigeria, the Senate on Thursday announced that it has constituted a 13-member Adhoc Committee to investigate oil theft in the country and its impact on petroleum production and oil revenues.
Members of the committee include Senator Bassey Albert Akpan (Chairman), Senators Yusuf A. Yusuf, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, Senator Kabiru Gaya, Senator Mohammed Adamu Aliero, Senator George Thompson Sekibo and Senator Gabriel Suswam.
Others are Senator Kashim Shettima, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Senator Ali Ndume, Senator Stella Oduah, Senator Sani Musa and Senator Ibrahim Gobir.
The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan said the committee has one month to conclude its investigations and report back to the Senate.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has noted that Nigeria has lost about $3.27 billion to crude theft and vandalism within a period of 13 months starting from January 2021 to February 2022.
This translates to an average monthly loss within the period under review to the value of $233.99 million, with daily average loss of estimated $7.72 million.
