The people of Ogoni in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, under the umbrella of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), have vowed never to allow oil exploration companies including the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Sahara Energy and Shell to resume exploration in any of their Ogoni oilfields.
The MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, who made this known while addressing congress in Gokana, accused the oil companies of sponsoring violence that would threaten the peace of the oil-rich Niger Delta region meanwhile they do not maintain justice and fairness.
The MOSOP boss pointed out that for over three decades now, the federal government failed to address the Ogoniland problem, describing it as genocidal, saying it has led to the people of the area living without infrastructure, no sources of livelihoods.
According to Nsuke, the poverty and neglect being experienced by the people of Ogoni have a devastating blow on their survival and security, saying that the people have resolved to stand for their rights and justice.
He said, “We are considering the enormous contributions of the Ogoni people in Nigeria which, according to records, far exceeded $200billion in the past 60 years, yet, the demand for a fair share from the natural endowments is not forthcoming.”
Nsuke maintained that they have a right to decide their priorities and chart a path to the future. This, according to him, includes engagement between the government and other relevant stakeholders to streamline the best approaches that will lead to a resolution of all disputes in Ogoniland.
