A Nigerian oil and gas firm, Elcrest Exploration and Production Nigeria limited in collaboration with the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Operator of the OML 40 JV, has donated various relief materials to communities in Gbetiokun area of Delta state.
Delivering the items which included cash and raw materials to the beneficiaries, Elcrest’s community relations coordinator, Mr. Ewoma Agba, said the company wanted to cushion the adverse effects on the livelihood of the people of the communities created by the oil spill from the MT Harcourt, a major vessel used by the (Joint Venture) JV to store produced crude oil before its exportation.
Agba explained that the donation was part of the firm’s social citizenship covenant with the host communities, adding that the donation was consistent with Elcrest’s corporate social responsibility commitment.
“We have noticed with uttermost dismay the impact the spillage brought to Gbetiokun. The Joint Venture, being a reputable organization, is responsible and responsive to the plights of the community where it operates,” the coordinator said.
Mr. Agba, who sympathized with the communities over the damages caused by the oil spillage, charged them to be resilient.
He advised leaders of the communities to ensure judicious distribution of the items to those in dire need, emphasizing that the JV would monitor the distribution process.
The Public Relations Officer of Beresibi Community, Mr. Prince Stanley Ekwejunor-Etchie, on behalf of the community extolled Elcrest and the JV partners for the relief materials.
Ekwejunor-Etchie however appealed to other corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals to follow the example of Elcrest to further help the members of the affected communities.
In the same vein, the spokesperson of Eghoro Community, Mr. Bemigho Ebosa, who also applauded Elcrest for the items, also called on the government at all levels, oil companies, and other relevant agencies to ensure that such damaging oil spill does not occur again.
While on his own part, the Chairman of Ureju Community, Mr. Eniyan Henry Tonwe, appreciated the firm for the items.
Ebosa assured Elcrest representatives that the items will be properly distributed as expected to the beneficiaries.
