Nigeria’s House of Representatives has commenced investigations into the discrepancies surrounding the figures bandied by various stakeholders as representing the actual volume of petrol consumed internally in Nigeria. they are also investigation the country’s failed refineries to determine the cost of reviving them.
Setting up the adhoc committees yesterday, Speaker of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila said the idea is, in part, to determine the level of subsidy being paid by the government, and also to ascertain what it would cost to bring the refineries back to life again.
Speaking at the plenary, Gbajamiala said it is only when the investigation is carried out that the country determine the actual volume of fuel consumed daily in the country and the amount of subsidy being paid by the government.
The Committee on fuel consumption is headed by Hon. Abdullahi Ningi, Hon. Ahmed Satome, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, Hon. Usman Zanna, Hon. Leke Abejide, and Hon. Uzoma Abonta.
The committee to investigate the refineries is headed by Hon. Ganiyu Johnson, Hon. Yusuf Buba, Hon. Fred Obua, Hon. Akinfolarin Mayowa, and Hon. Haruna Dederi.
The committee were mandated to speak to various stakeholders, International and local oil companies, experts in the industry and any other authorities who have idea about the assignment at hand.
“The committees has 4 weeks to present its report. In doing their work they should not restrict themselves to NNPC figures, as NNPC being an interested party of course. They should go far and wide, talk to experts, talk to labour, talk to national and international experts and those who will know.
“Talk to the motor vehicles registration centres, we just need to determine how much petrol we consume, talk to the transport companies, deal with facts and figures,” the Speaker said.
