Nigerian Refinery becomes 1st in Africa to get ISO certification

…As Baru calls for sustained quality management system

Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) Limited, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has bagged the  International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) certification, a feat that makes her the first refinery in Africa to attain such status.

According to Mr. Richard Omale, Managing Director of 3FM Solutions, a Management Consulting Company whose outfit conducted the QMS assessment, PHRC broke the ceiling by its adherence to international standards.

Presenting the certificate to Mr Maikanti Baru,  Group Managing Director, GMD, NNPC, Omale at at town hall meeting in Port Harcourt recently stated that the company’s milestone achievement aside what it stands to gain, the certification increases the confidence of doing business with them.

His words,“PHRC has a lot to gain from sustaining its ISO certification. Apart from belonging to a global movement for improved standards, the certification would provide senior management with an efficient management process and set out areas of responsibility across the organization, among other benefits”.

“In addition,  people doing business with the organization would also have the confidence that they are working with a reputable organization that does not only have documented processes and procedures but also pays attention to continual improvement.” Omale explained.

For Mr Baru,  who expressed joy for the award, he called on other NNPC subsidiaries to emulate PHRC refinery by ensuring they step up their art in line with global practice that would enable them get ISO certifications.

“,The impact of PHRC’s latest certification meant that the company had to keep going through various audits by Bureau Veritas (BV) to ensure that its quality management system was reviewed and standardized based on the streamlined process and improvement plans.” He said.
